Re. Waves and Tsunamis -
I think they are trying to quantify "spurts" of human emotions. It starts with the assumption that the human emotions and behavior as a group are predictable - a perfectly valid theory. But, I think there are two follies in the "a of 3 of 4 of 5" kind of analysis. First, they are assuming that the guy who devised the Wave Theory (Elliot?) got it figured out 100% correct. Second, their interpretation is as good as his. I am not sure if it is so easy to figure out.
My preference is to treat that theory (i.e. "human emotions and behavior as a group are predictable") as a valid hypothesis and pulse the emotions rather than try to measure them in quantitative terms.
