so far i've only had one case where the goods i received didn't live up to the statement of condition in the auction description. i wrote a polite letter to the seller, outlined my concerns, and she agreed to a full refund and paid for the return shipping expense.

the system is only as good as the people who participate, but i think eBay has done a great job of providing structure, accountability (in the form of peer review), and ethical guidelines.

"Auction site's ads probed"

"As eBay prepares to go public, a state attorney
general's office has notified the online auction
company that it has received customer complaints
about its advertising practices and its role in sales
that occur on its site."
