FAQ's-Frequently Asked Questions What is IP telephony and how does it differ from traditional telephony? Picking up the telephone and making a phone call is something that we all take for granted - we pick up the receiver, there is a dial tone, we dial the number, the other party's phone rings, they pick up the phone and we talk to each other. But what really happens when this process occurs? And how does using the Internet to transmit a call change the way it is sent and received? When using the traditional phone system, a call is transmitted using the public switched telephone network (PSTN) as an analog call. Internet protocol (IP) telephony utilizes the public Internet (or a private network) to transport a telephone call from one point to another. An IP telephone call differs in that the voice is first converted into data packets to provide a more efficient means of transport over the network. What advantages does the Internet have over the traditional phone network? Cost. The cost to a user who places an IP-based call will typically be 50-70% less expensive than making a call over the PSTN network. Are there quality issues with IP telephony? When Internet telephony was first introduced, there were issues regarding the quality of the voice transmission. (ex/ed) There are beginning to be varying degrees of quality available for IP calls, depending on a number of different elements, such as the amount of bandwidth accessible, the hardware or software originating and terminating the call, etc. Under certain ideal conditions, an IP telephony call can be made at the same quality as an analog call. INSERT -by me *Depends on the Gateway Are there features that can be offered with IP calls that cannot be offered with today's analog calls? Yes, when the call is converted to IP format, there are many features that can be added. Some examples are: one number, dynamic conferencing, "follow me" type service, whiteboarding, video and "call me" features on a web page. (ex/ed) Why would telephone companies provide IP telephony services? Won't this compete with their existing long distance services? It is anticipated that the provision of IP-based telephony will simply allow telephone companies more options for the termination of calls. A customer will be able to choose from a variety of service offerings and prices and a variety of new features not available with the technology in use today. above FAQ's borrowed from:http://www.ipass.com/services/telephony.html still digging when i should be sleeping r1
