Hong Kong - Novell Confident Of NetWare Launch Date HONG KONG, CHINA, 1998 SEP 3 (NB) -- By Michelle Phoon, IT Daily. Novell [NASDAQ:NOVL] is confident that it can reach its September 20 targeted shipping date for NetWare 5. Randy Pierson, vice president global field marketing said, "This is the most tested product in the history of Novell. We've had more beta sites than we have ever had and we have got over 265 servers within Novell running NetWare 5." With over 300,000 beta sites worldwide and over 1,000 beta sites in Hong Kong, Geoff Boorman, director of marketing of Asia Pacific, said the company is confident that the technology is in good shape after three and a half years in development and three public beta tests. Boorman predicted a strong reception for the new release in Hong Kong. "There is going to be a lot of noise," said Boorman. Powered by NetWare Directory Services (NDS), Novell's method of distributing information to local area network (LAN) clients, NetWare 5 allows small and large businesses to reduce the cost and complexity of deploying, managing and securing their networks. With the introduction of "pure" Internet Protocol (IP), NetWare 5 makes better use of network bandwidth and simplifies protocol management. It also supports the LDAP Version 3 communication standard for interoperability with other directories and new directory-enabled security features. This will include public/private key technology as well as support for the various levels of international cryptography. Included in NetWare 5 is Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for running server-based applications. Despite its current economic trough, Novell views Hong Kong as one of the bright spots of the Asia Pacific region. However, Pierson admitted that the current turmoil has made sales forecasts difficult to predict. "We can't certainly predict when those things are going to change or stabilize. We cannot predict with certainty what our competitors are going to do." With the release of NetWare 5, Novell believes that it is in a good position to both satisfy existing customers and convert new users. For a price of US$1,095, NetWare 4.1 customers can get a free upgrade to NetWare 5.0, which lists for a price of $1,195 for five users. Reported by Newsbytes News Network newsbytes.com .
