RE: Now when I want to establish a position I buy 100 shares at the market -- watch the price drop, buy a few thousand shares at the lower price, and save a hell of lot of money.

Isn't that called dollar-cost-averaging? Although highly touted in popular investment advice circles, I have never been convinced that it's a good technique. All examples I've seen to show the merit of DCA assume a falling price. What if the price is rising? Don't you lose money in that case?

Of course, since we seem to cause a price drop on share purchase, I should re-evaluate the technique and follow your example.
