Although Alpha uses PCI, I agree that there is not enough volume there to be more than a sideshow. But CPQ has routinely done its own chipsets for Intel CPUs and could do so again. I would expect that this strategy works when these companies use Intel CPUs as the basis for systems with the new PCI architecture.

Intel is a great believer in supporting standards no matter where they come from, although they prefer to drive the process. I would be very surprised if they did not get on board. In the unlikely event that Intel balks, the presence of a majority of systems using the new technology with Intel parts would bring them into the game sooner or later.
