You are exactly right! You describe my friend's other attributes perfectly. You must know him! What I was trying to say to him was that creativity and talent can only be enhanced by knowledge. And it also provides a common ground for communicating ideas (musical or otherwise).

Nothing is more discouraging than getting an introductory letter home from the Honors English Program at your child's high school, signed by all the Honors teachers and containing grammatical errors. Isn't that one letter that deserves the most critical proofing? So you may be right about teachers diminishing the importance of a skill because they themselves lack that skill and, like my friend, fail to recognize the importance of the skill in the development of the talent.
(Was that a run-on sentence? I get neurotic here.)
