I think I can answer that (assuming you actually were wondering why):

It's a courtesy to those who peruse a thread's list of posts before selectively diving in.

Before SI came up with bookmarks, and next/previous, you selected a thread and (just as now) a hundred or so of the most current posts are displayed with their first line of text. This allows you to see which posts might be of interest to you based on the author and/or the first line. If a line has "eom" at the end, you know that's all there is and you need not open that post. Most people now (I think) use bookmarks and always pick up where they left off--and use NEXT to read all posts in sequence.

Anyway, that's my guess about the purpose of "EOM." If you use NEXT, and thereby open each subsequent post without first seeing the first line, then EOM adds no value.
