jim, this is a very good point, one must look at company's futrue prospects. How far in future should one look at?
if you are looking at yahoo or aol how far in future would u look at before u see decent erning? vs dell and yet different for MRK/PFE.

one can also look at historical pe. A mature company would trade in
a certain historicla pe range. i.e. intel trades from 18-28 pe.
if u look at a hisortical pe chart you would know that. Too bad you can not see a forwrd pe chart, which could be created.

Based on improving future fundamentals a company would trade at higher historical pe.
dell@100pe = 165. dell@80 pe = 132.
dell @50pe = 82.5 (dell pe before the decline last oct. 97)
dell @47pe = $78, dell @35pe =57.75 (pe of oct 97 )

i use historical pe as those are the facts we have for relative prices. I am trying figure out what to use for evaluating the stock price today. 99 or 00 ernings?
evaluate the stock on 00 earnings when economy is crystal clear.
evaluate the stock on 99 earnings w. economy cloudy/company is clear.
evaluate the stock on historical earning when economy/company is cloudy.

How should one evaluate their evaluation consideration depending on weather outside ?

like they say, you can analyze till u r parelyzed or just give up and
trust the managment. For M. Dell is no hired hand, he has a big stake in the company.
