Stay away from those 'Nasty Registry Tricks', bdog ;)
I avoid regedit because regdt32 has a Read Only Mode.

We drink only Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in CA ;)

All,

Bdog, been there. Accidentally double clicking on a .reg can have undesired results. I find the single click mode of the web style interface on explorer even more likely to cause problems since a single click can merge any amount of reg data instantly with potentially disasterous results. Most people aren't often playing with reg files but I have done this myself at least twice :). Recommend the following tweak to avoid it.

Goto Exlplorer->Options->File Types-> Scroll to "Registration Entries". Then Edit and select the edit action versus the merge action and click "set to default". Hit OK to get out. All done....

BTW: This trick won't work with .bat dos batch files. Windows locks the entries for them and the default action cannot be change. Bob Sage pointed this out to me in Cleveland.
