Thanks for your point of view. Two comments.

Yes, the "warts" on DELL's competitors are a more pronounced - absolutely. But these competitors are doing more than just selling PC's which exposes them to more issues since the business is inherently more complex. There is just many more attributes to deal with. If the do a spin-off to focus on the PC market then that could change...just a thought.

As for the residential gateway being far off .. and DELL getting into that business. The resdiential gateway is here! The market for these devices is going to explode in 1999. These devices are akin to set-top boxes which are owned by and installed by the cableco. RBOC., CAP. These companies will purchase them direct from the manufacturers at anywhere from $100 to $200 each. There is no assembly required and therefore this product does not mesh well with DELL's current business. I would say DELL would be just as likely to begin selling portable stereos.
