<Is this a case of position unwinding before future expiration ? >

I doubt it, it seems like Cash and Futures have been trading places a lot recently. Particularly with the volatility it seems like the pits are just driving the market down with free spoos(discount to Cash) and then driving it back up gain with a hefty premium. I guess bigger traders won't allow the discount to continue for very long, but while the Futures are in freefall and at a discount everyone steps aside until the water level starts to equalize, it seems.

One hypothesis about Friday that I read was that the Fed stepped in and loaded the boat on Futures near the end of the day. The logic seems believable.

<If I remember correctly someone was indicating that weeks leading to triple witching generally moves in the direction of market movement for the period. >

I read something like that recently myself. I forgot the entire rationale but that was the gist of it.

Gotta get going, good luck today.
