My apologies for being either unclear or dumb. What I mean is that people haven't had to put that much into mutual funds - their portfolio has gone up without that. Therefore they didn't need to save that money but could spend instead.

Now they will need to save which they have not been doing previously. This money will go into banks and bonds, instead of into cash registers. At least that's what makes sense to me.
