Patriot Scientific's PSC1000 Processor Will Power New Digital Video Broadcast Solution
Digital Video Broadcast Offers Significant Market Potential
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998--Patriot Scientific Corp. (OTCBB:PTSC - news) today said its powerful PSC1000(TM) microprocessor will drive a new generation of Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) adapter cards for GENROCO Inc. (OTCBB:GRCI - news).

GENROCO has announced that they have successfully interfaced their new PSC1000 powered DVB adapter cards and a Concurrent Computer Corp. (NASDAQ:CCUR - news) ''MediaHawk'' Video Server to a Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE:SFA - news) ''Pegasus'' digital cable headend system. The single PCI card utilizes Patriot's powerful 32 bit Java(TM) microprocessor that enables it to merge as many as 70 three-megabit MPEG-2 program streams over a single DVB channel.

The PSC1000-powered GENROCO DVP-2732 is the first general-purpose computer interface capable of real time multiplexing of a full DVB channel of digital video data streams.

DVB, having originated in Europe and now being adopted in the United States, is an important, worldwide standard for connection of components making up digital video studios. Recently, cable TV companies Time-Warner, TCI, Cox and others, have announced plans to install millions of home set-top boxes for the introduction of digital broadcast television. This new technology will also make available true video-on-demand. VOD offers consumers instant access to a library of movies, with VCR-functionality such as pause, rewind and fast forward. Using video-on-demand technology, cable companies can pursue the $17 billion video rental and sales industry. Additional features are anticipated to include e-mail, web browsing, IP telephony, and home shopping.

To deliver the data, several hundred thousand DVB channels, each carrying 50 or more simultaneous subscriber streams, will be required in order to provide lowest cost per stream for expected peak use loads. GENROCO's new DVP-2732 PSC1000 powered controller is currently the only product capable of sustaining such speed in delivering transport streams containing interleaved voice, video, and data to cable headend devices.

''That's where our microprocessor plays such an important role,'' said Patriot's president and chief executive officer, Jim Lunney. ''Today, GENROCO's new controller, powered by our PSC1000 microprocessor, is the only product capable of sustaining such speed for delivering voice, video data and doing so at the lowest cost. This latest application once again demonstrates our microprocessor's extraordinary flexibility. Our partnership with GENROCO, both in this and other applications to be announced, gives us both a sense of pride and a firm belief in the viability of the PSC1000 as we move aggressively ahead in commercializing it.''

GENROCO reported earlier this year that it's DVB interfaces would be used in satellite links and other products by OpenTV. It also said that Patriot PSC1000 powered digital video products will be demonstrated by several companies at the International Broadcaster Convention in Amsterdam from September 11-15.

Founded in 1987, Patriot Scientific Corp. designs, markets and manufactures: the PSC1000, based on the patented ShBoom technology, a 32 bit microprocessor targeted at Java and Internet appliances as well as the traditional embedded systems markets; high-performance ISDN Basic Rate and Primary Rate products for digital communications; and ground penetrating radar and ionized gas antenna technologies.
