The only sure fire way to know if your wire has been sent is to ask for the Fed ID number. Most times all you will get is a confirm number, but at least they know you are on the ball, and will verify right on the spot whether the wire has been executed yet. Most of the time what happens is this; you request that a wire be sent, they say ok, then they put it in the pile of wires to go out that day, and they all get done at once, usually in the late afternoon, otherwise, banks would be doing wires all day. At that point, the receiving bank won't actually get it till the next day, and they won't even be aware that a wire is coming because it is in the fed system, and they have already closed their banking business for that day, even though the bank may be still open for business.
