Larry,
My assessment (and it may not be correct) is that most manufacturers
will push their existing 200mm fabs to their ultimate potential by selecting new enabling 200mm equipment and replacing older equipment
in a piece meal fashion so that they can continue to produce and
remain profitable. I don't expect to see any new 200mm fabs built
since there are some now starting to close. It appears that the
move to full 300mm production is about 2-3 years away, which was the
basis for my argument on the thread a couple of weeks ago. There is
still a lot of design/engineering work required before a complete
300mm toolset is production worthy and most equipment companies
have shelved/cutback their 300mm engineering projects until the
market is ready, even so there are some pilot line projects that
are developing 300mm future production capability.
