Does this presage a "tidal wave" of 56K 3COM modems? (Modems are not what 3Com is about, but that is the general view by many in the market place. It will be good to get the "modem problem" cleared from people's memory banks....then onwards to other/better things, while modems will just be a nice reliable cash flow constant for a few years)www4.zdnet.com :80/intweek/daily/980828b.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Inter@ctive WeekAugust 28, 1998 AOL Closing In On Modem Milestone By Steven Vonder Haar 10:00 AM EDT America Online Inc. has the 1 million-modem milestone within its sights. The nation's largest consumer online service Thursday said it will continue with its program of adding 25,000 modems to its network monthly - a pace that sets it on a path to eclipse 1 million modems overall within the next year. AOL now has nearly 800,000 modems in its network, climbing from the 447,000 modems the company had as of June 30, 1997. The company Thursday said that it has passed the 13 million-subscriber mark. So far, about 5 million of those subscribers have downloaded the 4.0 version of the company's user software launched in a commercial version on July 30. Currently, nearly half of all AOL's user sessions are being conducted with the upgraded software. AOL has logged peak usage of more than 750,000 simultaneous users, up from 400,000 simultaneous users at this time a year ago. The company said it now logs more than 1 billion Web hits daily, triple the Web activity from a year ago. AOL can be reached at www.aol.com E-mail Steven Vonder Haar
