In a way I agree with you Penni. I think there is a prime when a person is most susceptible in learning. It could be at the same time it is for every human or it could be different.

I am 25 now and I find that I am more willing and able to learn. Those could be due to mental maturity or maybe just my desire. I find that I can retain more things now than ever. I could attribute that to my age as well. I'm no longer glaring at material because I have a test in 7 hours. But I do think that there is a short lived window for this opportunity. As I get older it will become harder to break old habits. For now, I'm taking advantage of it :-)

I think a good education is the only guarantee of at least an average person. But, the majority of your knowledge comes from real world experiences.

Penni,

Yes and no. When I was young I was brought to a piano teacher of the old school, an elderly woman of Polish extraction with a great reputation (probably deserved) as a teacher. After a few weeks I gave it up in frustration. A few years later I started learning the guitar from a fellow down the street. He taught me three chords, and there was a song. A few variations in rhythm and volume, and there were several songs. A few days later we could play a few things together, and I was hooked. Then he started sneaking the theory in, and pretty soon I was learning without even knowing it. Turned out to be the path of least resistance.
