-ASCEND COMMUNICATIONS: Ascend launches MAX 6000 International Upgrade Presswire - September 07, 1998 13:14 V%M2 P%M2PR M2 PRESSWIRE-7 September 1998-ASCEND COMMUNICATIONS: Ascend launches MAX 6000 International Upgrade (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD -- With substantial savings, Ascend customers can upgrade to Ascend's MAX 6000 WAN access switch, delivering industry leading performance and multi-service access capabilities. Ascend Communications today announced a new upgrade program aimed at Service Providers and Corporations who wish to deploy Ascend's award-winning MAX 6000 WAN access switch. Bundled with Ascend's latest Multi-VPN technology and optional 16 port 56K series digital modems, Service Providers and Corporate customers can upgrade to the MAX 6000 providing services such as V.90, GSM and ISDN Internet access; enterprise Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Voice over IP on a single platform. Upgrade Details The MAX 6000 International Upgrade offers substantial savings for a MAX 6000 E1 chassis powered with Ascend's Multi-VPN and International Digital Access software in exchange for a deployed MAX 4000. The program provides an upgrade for MAX 4000 E1 units configured with AC power units or redundant AC or DC power units. MAX 4000 units with serial numbers greater than 6700000 (typically up to 18 months old) can be traded for a MAX 6000 unit with VPN and International Digital access software, saving up to 30% over a regularly-priced MAX 6000 depending upon configuration. In addition, customers can trade in MAX 4000 units with serial numbers smaller than 6700000 and greater than 5100000 (typically 18 to 30 months old) saving up to 24%. Customers receive a rebate for the savings when they return the MAX 4000 units to their Ascend Channel Partner or to selected Ascend depots worldwide. "Ascend wants its customers to use the MAX 6000 to expand their services to support Voice, Virtual Private Networks as well as GSM access and V.90 modem access on a single hardware platform," said Kurt Bauer, Vice President for Product Management of Ascend's Access Switching Division. Voice over IP Bundle In addition to upgrading their MAX 4000 chassis, customers can benefit from special bundles designed for the service provider to deliver additional services available with the MAX 6000. Ascend's MAX 6000 MultiVoice bundle is available whereby a customer can exchange a MAX 4000 for a MAX 6000 equipped with one Ascend MultiVoice 16 port slot card, and MultiVoice gateway and gatekeeper solutions. This allows service providers to trial Voice over IP in their network. Service Providers can deploy their MAX 6000s in stages over a period of 60 days to minimise any network downtime. Customers return their MAX 4000s to their Ascend Channel Partner or to designated depots in Europe, Asia, Latin and South America and Japan within 60 days of receiving their MAX 6000 units. Availability The MAX 6000 International Upgrade is available immediately, until December 30, 1998. For full details, Service Providers and Corporations should contact their Ascend Channel Partner or nearest Ascend office Editors Notes About the MAX 6000 The MAX 6000 is a Multi-service Access concentrator that leads the industry in performance and service generating capabilities. These services include Virtual Private Network access for enterprise customers, Internet port wholesaling for large network service providers, Voice over IP services, IDSL services and GSM mobile Internet access. The MAX 6000 can be managed under Ascend's NAVIS Access management platform. The MAX 6000 E1 provides four E1 ports. All ports can accommodate either channelised E1 or ISDN PRI services. A high-speed serial communications port is standard that allows V.35, RS-449 or X.21 communications at speeds up to eight Mbps. The LAN port on the MAX 6000 is a full-duplex autosensing 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet port. This high-speed connection enhances the MAX STACK feature that allows multiple MAX concentrates to be connected together into a single Virtual Digital Access Concentrator or V-DAC. Memory can be expanded by adding eight MB of flash and up to 32 MB of DRAM. The MAX 6000 supports up to six slot cards in a single chassis and supports Ascends Series 56, V.110 digital modems and IDSL slotcards supporting up to 96 V.90 and 120 ISDN B-channels, up to 48 V.110 or IDSL calls. ATMP, IP Direct, Frame Direct, PPTP and L2TP VPN protocols are supported by the MAX 6000 through its True Access Operating System (TAOS). Ascend has one of the largest deployments of VPN solutions worldwide with leading carriers, PTTs and Internet Service Providers. The MAX 6000 is NEBS Level 3 compliant, European ETSI compliant and has a Bellcore-recognized mean time between failure (MTBF) of 500,000 hours.
