RE: IBM TinyDisc

The IBM TinyDrive benefits from the fact that it can fit into a CompactFlash slot. Iomega's Vapor! is too big, bulky, and wide to do fit into what is the Standard interface.

Iomaniacs hope that the Vapor! niche product is what will catapult portable devices into the mainstream. However, this will not happen. There are numerous other barriers other than storage that keep this from happening. For instance, the high prices that digital cameras exhibit do not result from storage concerns. It results from constantly having to develop better CCD chips, better optics, and better software. The supplied 8MB Flash Cards that come with these $1000 cameras add less than $30 to the cost of the entire camera package.

A benchmark digital camera, the $900 Kodak 260 package, has NO INTERNAL MEMORY. Therefore, Vapor! will not work directly with this camera. The camera uses its solid state removable CompactFlash Card as its memory. A disc drive with no memory buffer (like Vapor!) cannot work with hardly ANY digital cameras out there. Neither can the IBM TinyDrive

Both of these niche products are money-losing pitholes waiting to be dug.
