It sounds catastrophic, but we should bear in mind that the economy of Russia is about the size of the economy of Holland. I doubt we would be worried if Holland were having these problems. The issue is the nuclear weapons, but that has been an issue for some time and has long been out of control. This makes for great headlines, but I doubt its economic significance other than as an explanation for why the US market tanks or gold goes up.

I doubt that this will be the real reason as forces in effect for long time will drive both the US market and gold.
