OPTi Demonstrates Hot-Attach PCI Interface and Quad-Controller, and Eight-Port USB Card at PC Developers Conference in Paris

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1998--

FireLink and FireBridge Controllers Provide

Unique Hot Plug Solution

OPTi Inc. (Nasdaq/NMS:OPTI) will demonstrate new applications of its FireLink USB controller and FireBridge II hot-attach PCI bridge at the PC Developers Conference and Exhibition at the Palais des Congres in Paris.

OPTi is also participating in the conference program delivering Session No. 236 under "Emerging Technologies" entitled "PCI Hot Plug - A Fault Tolerant Approach," presented by Michael Schumacher, Applications Manager at OPTi.

One demonstration involves FireBridge II, a PCI-PCI bridging device that has been tailored for use in a hot-attach environment. Unlike solutions using only PCI Hot Plug, this device allows hot-attach PCI using only the drivers in Windows 98 and the upcoming Windows NT 5. No ACPI coding is necessary.

A second demonstration uses FireBridge II as a PCI-PCI bridging device in conjunction with four OPTi FireLink USB controllers, for a total of eight USB ports. With the growing awareness of bandwidth limitations imposed by hub-based USB expansion, the OPTi demonstration using four separate, inexpensive controllers illustrates a clean and simple way to offer unlimited USB bandwidth.

"The OPTi PCI-PCI and PCI-USB bridges offer hot-attach capability for both low-speed serial and high-speed parallel expansion, without the software complexity of competing solutions," said Mark R. Williams, marketing director for OPTi. "OPTi will continue to expand its presence in the hot-plug market in coming months, providing designers with simple-to-use building blocks for unlimited expansion no matter which bus they choose."
