Cabletron Delivers the Industry's Most Powerful Enterprise Desktop Switch
September 8, 1998 08:02 AM

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998--

New SmartSwitch Router 2000 Brings Wire-Speed Application Level Control To The Desktop - Priced 70% Below The Competition

Cabletron Systems CS today introduced the SmartSwitch Router 2000 (SSR 2000) -- a powerful, 10/100/1000 wire-speed switch that provides customers massive bandwidth and pinpoint control of their network - priced 70 percent below the competition.

With two gigabit uplinks and support for switching at layers 2, 3 and 4, the new switch drives application-level control to the desktop. The switch allows IS professionals to easily allocate bandwidth to business critical applications, providing prioritization of network traffic.

"With all the attention paid to performance and advanced functionality in next-generation networking devices, you would think that ease of use, low acquisition and ownership costs have been dropped from the evaluation equation. Nothing could be further from the truth," said Mark Leary, Director, Local Area Networks at IDC. "With pressure on the network manager coming from all directions, operating a network comprised of simple and affordable components is more important than ever. This is the value that Cabletron's new SSR 2000 brings to the table." The SSR 2000 - Future Proof Networking

The SSR 2000's extensive feature set and superior performance allows network managers to "future-proof" networks, ensuring that their investment is protected from forklift upgrades and technology changes. The feature-set includes:

--8 Gbps non-blocking switching fabric
--More than 6 million packet-per-second switching and routing
throughput
--Wire-speed full function routing and switching
--Application-level control
--Up to 32 ports of connectivity (base unit of 16 ports 10/100
Base-TX)
--2 expansion slots/2-port Gigabit expansion modules
--8-port 10/100 Base-TX and 100 Base-FX expansion modules

Enterprise-Class Switch Routing

In a related announcement today, Cabletron unveiled a full line of enterprise-class switch routing products that address end-user requirements for more bandwidth at all levels of the enterprise. Advanced features available on all SSR products such as application control, quality of service, and enhanced security provide network managers with proactive tools for building next-generation networks.

Availability and Pricing

The SSR 2000 is the third member in the SmartSwitch Router family and the first in a fixed configuration format. The SSR 2000 joins the SmartSwitch Router 8000 and the SmartSwitch Router 8600 both of which are high port, high-density chassis-based backbone class products. Configured with 16 10/100 autosensing ports the SSR 2000 lists for $4,995. An SSR 2000 pre-configured with 24 10/100 autosensing ports and a 2-port 1000 Base-SX expansion module lists for $8,995. CoreWatch, Cabletron's JAVA-based management application can be purchased separately at $495.
