One of the motivating factors in the region is obviously oil production and the current worldwide glut. Another is Muslim radicals seeking a more autonomous hegemony over the region pushing the US military presence out of the region. A specific development not often mentioned is the emergence of Muslim radicalism in Saudi Arabia and what that portends if Saudi Arabia goes through a power struggle. And of course there is always the issue of Israel in the midst of these Middle Earth Kingdoms.
