Eric,

First of all:

I understand that 3COM submitted a proposal to AT&T over a year ago for a
digital (ATM) IP network design but was turned down as (1) too expensive and (2)
too sophisticated ..... perhaps with the TCI deal this proposal may be revisited.
(note: I heard this at the San Jose ATM trade show this year and confirmed by an
engineer who worked on the proposal).

I don't know about this.. but I'll take your word for it.

Next, Re: You stated...
"The next logical step for DTV is over IP/ATM. Why should I have seperate
protocols, equipment and transmission lines for these..."

Do you think AT&T and TCI see it this way? IF so who would make the ATM
switches and other equipment for their digital network back bone?

Yes I do to be completely honest. It will allow easy delivery of TV and Cable modems over a simple easy to work with infrastructure, that will require only 1 set of know-how, which reduces labor costs as well as equipment costs. As for who see below ;-)

From your understanding of 3COM technology, does 3COM have the leading edge
ATM technology that an AT&T/TCI would buy into for their integrated digital
network? Do their products provide for an "open system" design built around the
latest ATM standards?

With the addition of the BFG9000 (see my post to Joe if you wanna know what the BFG9000 is) COMS has the single most capable piece of ATM switching equipment. Add to this the fact taht they are already in bed with TCI and I think you have a real winner.

I can see the announcement now:

"Today AT&T announced that they, along with TCI will build a top of the line next generation network backbone, bringing together television, telephone and internet technologies. Said (whoever the chairman of T is) 'Together with 3COM corporation we are going to build the most capable network the world has ever seen'.

In a related story 3COM parts (ticker symbol COMS) were trading up nearly 10 dollars at 45 and 7/8ths.

Stay tuned to CNBC as we are going to be joined by Eric B. and (Chair ot T) to ask them about the upcoming network".

Steve
