IDT'S RC4640 Microprocessor Selected for Extreme Networks' Award-winning Summit48 Enterprise Desktop Switch Business Wire - September 08, 1998 09:16 Networld+Interop 98
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998--
Switch Products Using IDT's RISController Processor Win Networld+Interop "Best of Show" Award for Second Year in a Row
IDT (NASDAQ:IDTI), a leading manufacturer of RISC microprocessors, today announced that its RC4640(TM) RISController(TM) microprocessor was selected by Extreme Networks for its award-winning Summit48 Enterprise Desktop Switch.
This year, at the Networld+Interop 98 exhibition in Las Vegas, Extreme Networks' Summit48 won the "Best of Show" award in the network infrastructure category. The price/performance advantages of IDT's RC4640 make it the microprocessor of choice for Extreme Networks' family of Summit switch products. Extreme Networks won the same award at last year's Networld+Interop for its Summit1 LAN Switch, which also used the IDT RC4640.
"The superior performance and high internal and external data bandwidth of the RC4640 enable the Summit48 to run routing protocols for Layer 3 switching and provide advanced network management, including Web-based management and high-performance RMON," said Herb Schneider, vice president of engineering at Extreme Networks. "The exceptional price/performance of the RC4640 has once again proved itself to be a winning combination with our own ASICs in our Summit family of LAN switches."
The Summit48 Enterprise Desktop Switch features 48 switched 10/100-Mbps autosensing Ethernet ports and two full duplex Gigabit Ethernet ports. Summit48 has a 17.5-Gbps non-blocking switch fabric and a forwarding rate of 10.1 million packets per second. Summit48 supports wire-speed Layer 2 switching in its base configuration and easily scales up to wire-speed IP Routing at Layer 3 with a simple field upgrade key.
"The 64-bit CPU processing power of the RC4640 combined with the cost savings of the 32-bit system interface have made it an optimal microprocessor for embedded applications including industry-leading internetworking and multimedia products," said Nick Kucharewski, vice president of IDT's microprocessor division. "For the second year running, we are proud to be a part of the award-winning system performance of the Summit LAN Switch product family."
The RC4640 is a 3.3-volt, 200-MHz 64-bit RISC CPU with enhanced DSP capability. The processor achieves 265-Dhrystone MIPS performance and 100 million multiply/accumulate (MAC) operations per second. The RC4640 combines a true internal 64-bit execution core with a 32-bit bus interface, to help achieve the lowest possible system cost, and supports greater than 400-MBps external bus bandwidth.
IDT's World-Class RISC Microprocessor Family
The RC4640 is an important member of IDT's widely used 32/64-bit RISController microprocessor family that implements the MIPS instruction set. Offering a wide range of software-compatible, price/performance choices, IDT has optimized the design of its high-performance microprocessors for use in an assortment of embedded applications, including internetworking, multimedia, data communications and telecommunications products, such as VideoSurfer's TV-TOP(TM) digital set-top box, the WebTV(R) Plus Internet Receiver, EchoStar's digital broadcast satellite receiver, Cisco routers and cable modem home connectivity equipment.
