Some Global IP Telephony News. IMHO IP Telephony is the Hottest sector to be in right now, and to think we are in at ground level!

Deutsche Telekom Launches IP
Telephony Service In Canada

****Deutsche Telekom Launches IP Telephony Service In
Canada 09/01/98 TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA,
1998 SEP 1 (NB) -- By Martin Stone, Newsbytes. One day
after Bell Canada announced the introduction of Internet
Protocol (IP) telephony services in Canada, German-based
Deutsche Telekom has introduced T-NetCall, a new IP
Telephony service for the Canadian market.

Unlike the Bell Canada service, which is still in its initial start-up phase and limited to a small number of destinations, Deutsche says T-NetCall customers will be
able to make international phone-to-phone calls to over
100 countries.

Also unlike the Bell service, which uses the public Internet
to transmit, calls via Deutsche Telekom are transmitted in
IP format using the company's global backbone network via
local gateways.

Deutsche Telekom spokeswoman Helen Sawick told
Newsbytes: "The public Internet network creates quality
degradation, interruptions and a mucky sound, but our
quality is quite good."

"T-NetCall eliminates many of the traditional problems
with Internet telephony," said Roland Bopp, president and
chief executive officer (CEO) of Deutsche Telekom North
America Inc. "Calls on the Deutsche Telekom network are
more secure since our network is more reliable and less
congested than the public Internet."

Sawick explained that calls via Deutsche's system are
converted to data packets and transmitted over the
company's own network.

Johanne Cooper, general manager of Deutsche Telekom
Canada added, "We believe our Canadian customers will
welcome T-NetCall as an alternative to traditional calling
and will be pleased with the quality of service and the
competitive rates."

In this initial phase, customers access T-NetCall with a
touch-tone telephone and require no special equipment.
Once accessing the gateway, callers are guided through the
system using voice prompts.

Deutsche Telekom tested the T-NetCall service with
customers in Germany, Japan, the US, and Canada during
1997, the company reports.

Sawick said that, among the countries presently accessible
via Deutsche are Italy, Poland, Mexico, Netherlands, Hong
Kong, India and Singapore, as well as Canada and the US.
She said that the company hopes to offer global service by
next month.

Deutsche Telekom is one of the world's leading providers
of international telecommunications. Deutsche Telekom
(Canada) Inc. is a subsidiary serving client needs in the
Canadian market.

Yes, LL, thanks a lot for your report. You're so darned eloquent.

It'll be interesting to see how the tone of our thread will change when the 10-SB actually comes out ... like a rite of passage ... hopefully the first of many ...
