Are you saying that Roman Catholics are not Christians? You are presumably aware that until Martin Luther came along the Roman Catholic Church WAS Christianity. Or wasn't it? If it wasn't, what was?

Actually, the Roman Catholic Church was Christianity only from the time of Constantine's conversion. At that time there were many different sects of Christians. Some believed in the divinity of Jesus, some didn't. Some believed in the virgin birth, some didn't. The catholics were the only sect that would agree to state sponsorship, so that's the group Constantine adopted. It turned out great for the catholics. Because they now had a guaranteed income through Roman taxation, they were able to destroy the other Christian groups.

That is why there were so many scrolls of sacred texts hidden in caves -- the catholics were intent on all the sacred books that they decided didn't belong in their "official" version of what we now call the bible.

For further insight into some of those groups, you can read The Nag Hammadi Library (available in paperback at Borders and elsewhere) which is a collection of translations of scrolls found at Nag Hammadi in 1947 which included not only very early versions of books in "the bible" but other books -- and other gospels -- that had been suppressed.

Steven,

<<<Are you saying that Roman Catholics are not Christians? You are presumably aware that until Martin Luther came along the Roman Catholic Church WAS Christianity. Or wasn't it? If it wasn't, what was? >>>

The bride of Christ that is talked about in the book of Revelations is not the Catholic church. But don't misinterpret this into thinking that I'm saying no Catholics are saved.

<<<The scriptures are, alas, all too clear, you have cited them repeatedly. If we believe those scriptures, we must believe that God has condemned those children to eternal damnation. I do not and will not believe this.>>>

I maintain that the scriptures are not clear to me in this respect. When the Children of Israel disobeyed God's command to enter the promise land on His terms He sentenced all of them to die in the wilderness except Joshua, Caleb and those who had not yet reached an age of accountability. On the other hand when some children mocked one of His servants He sent two bears out to kill them all. (God is zealous of His servants that proclaim His word)

Chris

Steven,

No organized religion has exclusive or inclusive rights to Christianity. In fact most organized religions, predominately are not Christian, including today's Roman Catholism.

They might exclaim they are, but that is a far cry from being a Christian. Evidence they are not Christian;

1. The Pope - Where does he get his authority?
2. Mary - Praying to her, is saying that she could hear you. God is the only omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscent person in the universe.
3. Confession to priests - Where do priests, or just plain men, get the authority to absolve someone from their sin?
4. Pergatory - Absent from the body, present with the Lord...Pergatory has no place.
5. Catacisms - Man-made books supposed to be of God, but studied rather than the bible in Catholic education classes.
6. The saints - Where does the Catholic definition of a saint come from? It is certainly not the bible. The bible defines a saint as one who is a believer. That's all! And praying to them, that's to much.....
7. Richest Organization in the world - Does the bible teach to accumulate wealth, to be the richest? Or does it teach to give to the needy?

AND MUCH, MUCH more.........

I am not trying to smash any one religion though, most organized religions are screwed up. But when a religions main tenants conflict with the bible so much, that religion can not be considered Christian.

I hope this does not offend anyone....

God Bless,
Steve
