Japan's PC Sales in Second Week of August Reach High Level

September 8, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Japan's PC sales at mass retailers of electric appliances remain favorable in the wake of the launch of Microsoft's Windows 98.
In the second week of August (Aug. 10-16) sales fell, because that was the week that many businesses took their summer holidays. PC sales were at about the same level as in the fourth week of July, the week right after the launch of Windows 98.

According to GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company that deals with POS data from retailers of electric appliances, PC sales in the second week of August at about 2,000 shops increased 4.9 percent from the previous week in terms of units, and they increased 4.0 percent in terms of value (See table).

Sales rose 58.4 percent year on year (from Aug. 11-17, 1997) in volume, and were up 50.1 percent in value.

In particular, sales of desktop PCs are buoyant. The year-on year comparisons for sales of desktop PCs have been positive since the fourth week of July. Sales of notebook PCs also recorded a high level of performance, following that in the fourth week of July. The launch of Microsoft's Windows 98 provided a boost to the personal-use PC market.

The average sales price of PCs in the second week of August registered 231,865 yen (US$1,700), or down 2,181 yen from 234,046 yen (US$1,720) in the previous week.

The data GfK Japan releases are from about 2,000 outlets of 41 firms. GfK Japan selected the 41 in 1996 and it has been releasing their data since then.

GfK Japan covers a greater number of outlets with combined unit-based sales accounting for about 10 percent of total domestic PC shipments and about 25 percent of total retail sales.
