Dataquest forecasts Internet server market growth

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept 8 (Reuters) - The worldwide Internet server market is expected to grow 114 percent, with revenues reaching $13.27 billion in 1998, according to Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group Inc. (Nasdaq:GART - news).

The market experienced explosive growth of 276 percent in 1997, with revenue reaching $6.21 billion, Dataquest said.

In 1997, the worldwide market leader was Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news), with revenues accounting for 22.3 percent of the market, followed by Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news) with 19.6 percent market share.

The midrange Internet server market accounted for more than 63 percent of the worldwide Internet server market in 1997, with revenue reaching $3.97 billion. The entry-level Internet server market followed with revenue at $1.60 billion in 1997. Dataquest forecasts midrange Internet servers to continue to dominate the market through 2002.
