Global chip sales drop 1.9 pct in July SAN JOSE, Sept. 9 (Reuters) - Global sales of semiconductor microchips fell 1.9 percent in July to $9.66 billion from $9.86 billion in June as an oversupply of memory chips pressured prices, the Semiconductor Industry Association said Wednesday. The trade group said sales in the Asia Pacific region showed the greatest month-to-month decline dropping 3.0 percent to $2.2 billion from $2.26 billion. In Japan, chip sales in July were roughly equal to June's $2.0 billion, but that country showed the largest year-to-year drop of any region, a 30.2 percent drop from last year's $2.9 billion. Much of it was due the depreciating Japanese yen. Total year-to-year sales were off 17 percent from $11.6 billion one year ago with sales in the United States off 17 percent, the Asia Pacific 13.7 percent and Europe 3.9 percent.
