Tero: Yawn. The Senate is not quite the US Gov't. Well, maybe close, since our VP "presides" so therefore the right wing extremists prevail there completely. Hey, maybe something doesn't quite track with that. :-) Once again, the Q has strong support in the Executive Branch, the FCC etc. not exactly extremist Republican strongholds. Our Senate will weigh in but do you think your warm embrace of its leadership will help the Ericy attack - and your vehement attack somehow seems to lack a certain diplomatic smoothness and skill, no? Seems to this poster that this discussion has reached absurdity and perhaps it would be a bit better to discuss the natural alliance between the Q and Nokia which could be a worldwide force if working together and would leave Ericy on the outside looking in. The Q and Nokia - together the world ! :-) Chaz

Tero, it is simple. Qualcomm has something for sale which is really, really popular. Those who want to buy it think it too expensive. So they are whining, forming gangs and seeking political help to confiscate the property by way of a 'standard'. Qualcomm has sought their government's legislative, political and military protection to ensure their property is not stolen, which is a prime function of government in some people's opinion.

That's all! Not really moral ground. Not big demands - sellers always decide the price they will accept.

Tero, what trade war is Qcom threatening? Not being willing to licence its IPR except on acceptable terms is hardly a trade war. Seeking protection against patent infringement is hardly a trade war.

The ones who are trying to gang up against Qcom, in order to wrest its technology on pittance terms, and on terms that lock the Q out of wide areas of the world, is Ericy.

So long as Q's patents really are solid and really do tie up the area, it won't work. If there are real chinks in this armour Q is vastly overplaying its hand. If there are not, it is not. And it is not surprising that Ericy is trying to do what its trying to do. Or that it will fail.

Sure the hurting Koreans are trying to wriggle out from having to pay Q lots, by allaying with Ericy. Previously they allied w/ the Q, as a way of getting a foothold in the cellular business. One that would have been more difficult if competing against the established players in the GSM world directly.

Says absolutely nothing about the validity of Q's position. What's really going on is that Ericy is trying to line up huge and widespread political pressure to crack Q's apparently pretty rock solid patent position. Seems to me.
