Five Additional Iridium Satellites Successfully Deployed WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Five additional Iridium satellites were successfully launched onboard a Delta II rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. This is the seventeenth launch for Iridium (Nasdaq: IRIDF) in sixteen months. This launch was part of the maintenance phase and replaces five satellites that have experienced anomalies. Two of the five replacement satellites fill operational slots in the constellation the other three serve as spares. The five satellites are part of the Iridium's 66-satellite wireless personal telecommunications network designed to offer voice, data, fax and paging, to customers with Iridium handheld telephones and pagers. "Today's success of a Delta II rocket is one last important milestone before introducing the first global wireless telephone service. This launch is one of a series of replacement launches that assures Iridium a full operational constellation in-orbit," said Dr. Edward F. Staiano, Iridium LLC Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The Delta II rocket lifted off the launch pad at 2:13 p.m. PDT. Satellite separation occurred approximately 85 minutes after liftoff. The five satellites will be maneuvered into their respective positions to become part of the operational constellation.
