NEC aims for 500 bln yen sales in 2005 on W-CDMA

''NEC is targeting worldwide sales in 2005 of 500 billion yen in the W-CDMA business, of
which 100 billion yen will be generated from the Asian market,'' the company said in a
statement. The Asian market excludes Japan, it said.

''China will be a big market as it is eager to introduce cutting-edge technology for mobile
communications,'' Yukihiko Baba, an NEC managing director told a new conference.

The news conference was held to announce NEC's establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary, NEC Mobile Communications
Development Singapore Pte Ltd, to develop hardware and software for W-CDMA base station systems.

Baba said the new unit, scheduled to start business later this month, would assist NEC's design and development operations in
Japan.

W-CDMA technology makes possible mobile multimedia applications such as desktop computing through mobile phone
networks, highspeed wireless Internet services and video transmission.
