As for everyone making money if Microsoft is broken up, the obvious question is-- why doesn't Microsoft break itself up right now?

Yeah, sure, AT&T was broken up and everyone made money, but:
1) AT&T never traded anywhere close to the multiples that Microsoft is trading at now.
2) At least part of the money everyone made is a result of the increased P/E ratios of the current market.
3) Since you don't know what would have happened had they not broken up, you can't really make the argument that the break up was what made the money for the investors.
4) A sample of one (ok, 2 if you include Standard Oil) doesn't make a rule.

Oh, and one more thing:
Gates is more of a mastermind than we give him credit for

When people start worshipping the CEO of a company, it's because they don't have anything of substance to back them up.

Cathleen, I see Ed recycled a post of his over there, seems pretty quiet otherwise. Ed and friends are going to dump Linux CDs into Boston harbor if things go against Bill, I guess.

Bill go to jail? That's a new one. Has anyone ever gone to jail on antitrust? Untouchable? That was the line on John Gotti, too. If it's broken up (very hypothetical, that one), it's totally possible that the shareholders will make money.

On that hypothetical subject, here's an old piece, quoted for amusement only.

Is it time to bust up Microsoft? news.com

Finally, a media company called Stumble for its MSN online service, MSNBC cable-online news joint venture, consumer-oriented content software, (Encarta, Microsoft Money, and the Microsoft Home line), and future media operations.

Maybe they could hire Reggie to turn that one around. Microsoft knows new media, you know. Me, I preferred Fred Moody, who also suggested a Microsoft BIOS company, last fall. Another technical wizard there.

Cheers, Dan.

Actually Bill Gates s widely viewed as a mastermind because he invested the PC and several other applications that followed. Frankly he did build an empire on squashing the little guys and getting in with his technology first. He is definitely considered the most knowledgable person in the industry...hwoever, he has made major mistakes. MSFT Windows 95 was delayed then had major bugs, but everyone uses it. MSFT 98 already has a bug alert and fix it page.

Bottom line, whether MSFT is diversified or not, whether he gives the code for NT or not, MSFT will not tumble like IOM. It's still a good stock, one I own, one I won't sell, but one I am not buying more of now.

Good luck investing
