SOURCE: Virginia Quality Healthcare Network Virginia's First Erectile Dysfunction Education Campaign Kicks Off in Richmond Group Asks Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources to Help Spread the Word that 'IT'S NO JOKE' RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives of the Virginia Quality Healthcare Network met today with Virginia Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Resources Scott Daniel to ask for the Commonwealth's assistance in educating the public on the seriousness of male erectile dysfunction (ED). ''Since Viagra was introduced a few months ago, the serious nature of erectile dysfunction has become fodder for late night comedians and cartoonists,'' said Vic Maloy, representing the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. ''For 20 years I've been counseling couples struggling with this affliction. The last few months have been difficult for them as they see the condition trivialized and demeaned by the media.'' Maloy's group is one of several volunteer health and advocacy organizations who make up a Virginia coalition dedicated to increasing public understanding of ED by presenting the latest medical information available on the disease. The Network placed educational ads in three Virginia daily newspapers today to share their message with the public. An estimated 30 million American men are afflicted with ED each year, according to a study by the National Institutes of Health. Most ED is often the result of serious conditions such as prostate cancer, spinal cord injury and severe depression. It can also be a medical marker for other illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis. Aged men who experience ED are a small percentage of the total managing the condition. In fact, studies in men ages 40 to 70 suggest that in one million men who seek evaluation for erectile dysfunction, doctors will uncover 30,000 cases of untreated diabetes, 50,000 cases of untreated heart disease and 140,000 cases of untreated hypertension. An ED Hotline, 1-800-379-4118, has been established to provide information to those who wish to learn more about the illness. ''With the advent of Viagra and several other ED products, there is new hope for those men who struggle with ED,'' Maloy said. ''It need not destroy a man's self esteem or his marital intimacy.'' Several medical treatments are available that can effectively treat erectile dysfunction, said Maloy, and he urges men who are dealing with it see their physician as soon as possible for an examination and prognosis.
