ONLINE merchant competitor & German stock market darling, Intershop.

[FRANKFURT--Reuters] "German stock market darling Intershop Communications Inc said on Thursday that it expected the U.S. and European markets as well as acquisitions to fuel brisk growth even with Asian expansion plans on hold.

An electronic commerce software company that was founded in the former East Germany and held a spectacular initial public offering in July, Intershop recently delayed a plan to build up sales and marketing operations in Asia...The 28-year-old chief executive pointed to the first half of 1998 for emphasis. Intershop, now based in San Francisco, saw sales soar more than fivefold to $7.9 million, or 40 percent more than in all of 1997.

In August the company forecast full-year sales of $20 million, and set a target of $100 million by 2000.

Expectations of such growth helped make Intershop one of the most successful German IPOs ever when it offered 1.8 million shares at 100 marks each on Germany's Neuer Markt, an 18-month old exchange for growth companies.

On their first day of trading, they rocketed 160 percent to 260 marks. On Thursday they were at 187, down 8.50 marks.

Intershop's IPO success will make it easier for the company to move ahead with plans to supplement internal growth with acquisitions, Schambach said.

"We are in a position to do acquisitions. We are looking into the possibilities now," he said...The 360-employee company has already put itself on the e-commerce map. In June, PC Week, a U.S. trade magazine, gave it the top rating in a comparison of five products for setting up electronic storefronts on the Internet.

The company estimates it has 10 percent of a market that will grow to $100 million in the next few years. Some 3,000 Internet shops use its software, including online malls operated by Deutsche Telekom AG and about 30 other telephone companies.

Founded in Jena, a city known in the past for fine optics, Intershop is now based in San Francisco and has 14 offices on five continents..."
