I'm not an expert, nor am I an engineer. Suggest you go here and pose your question:

This is where engineers, consultants, etc. discuss specific issues.

Dave Hall monitors the embedded system section. He's the one who wrote about the fire engine problem. Go to "Transportation."

Dave's a well-known expert on these issues. He's frequently quoted in various trade publications. The reason I made my post, was that if Dave considered this a potential problem ... it was worth checking out further.

When push comes to shove, any microprocessor has the potential for a problem. Granted, it's a small percentage. But, when it comes to emergency vehicles ... you want to be sure there won't be a problem.

I started a "Y2K Embedded System" thread earlier this year. I had a link to documented Y2K failures with 30% (+/-) fire trucks purchased in Texas since 1985. If you want to go back on that thread (it's somewhere in the 1st 200 posts) ... you might want to check that out and track down that source.

FIRE TRUCKS: More Problems

"Representatives from the City of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, told us about testing the Y2K status of equipment on their fire trucks. To their great relief, they found that the trucks' water pumps are year 2000 compliant. To their dismay, however, it turned out that the mechanisms operating their ladders will not work without Y2K repairs. This is a fine illustration of how the Y2K problem can pop up where you least expect it.

Further, as Baton Rouge reported on its findings, representatives from the City of New Orleans admitted they had never thought to test their fire trucks. This illustrates yet another crucial point: the value of sharing information. It is essential at every level-Federal, State, local, non-profit, and private-sector.
