GartnerGroup's Dataquest Forecasts Internet Server Market to
Grow 114 Percent in 1998; Upcoming Dataquest Conference to
Examine Emerging Server Technologies
08:12 a.m. Sep 08, 1998 Eastern

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998--As more users look to
purchase full-featured Internet servers, rather than upgrade their current systems
with Internet software, the worldwide Internet server market will reap the benefits,
with revenue projected to reach $13.27 billion in 1998, according to Dataquest Inc., a
unit of Gartner Group Inc. (NASDAQ:GART). The market experienced explosive
growth in 1997 as the worldwide Internet server market grew 276 percent with
revenue reaching $6.21 billion.

In 1997, the worldwide Internet server market was led by Sun Microsystems, whose
revenue accounted for 22.3 percent of the market, followed by Hewlett-Packard
with 19.6 percent market share. While the Internet server market was dominated by
a relatively small number of vendors, Dataquest analysts said it's not too late for
vendors to succeed in this thriving market.

"It's important to remember that the Internet server market is still in its infancy and
has the kind of dynamic qualities that promise not just change, but very quick
change," said Kimball Brown, vice president and chief analyst for Dataquest's
Intranet and Web Servers Worldwide program. "As a result, significant opportunities
exist for vendors that do not currently reside in the upper reaches of the revenue and
shipment picture."

The midrange Internet server market accounted for more than 63 percent of the
worldwide Internet server market in 1997, with revenue reaching $3.97 billion. The
entry-level Internet server market followed with revenue at $1.60 billion in 1997.
Dataquest forecasts midrange Internet servers to continue to dominate the market
through 2002.

"Midrange systems are often found in such applications as Internet database serving,
Internet compute serving, and high-end Internet file serving, where they handle huge
numbers of HTML pages for ISPs or function in technical/engineering
environments," said Brown.

"The superior availability and scalability of these systems over entry-level servers are
essential in environments in which the ISP's entire business rests on the availability of
its services."

GartnerGroup's Dataquest Reports U.S. Digital
Handset Market Grew 283 Percent in 1997

San Jose, Calif., August 17, 1998-The U.S. digital handset market
experienced explosive growth in 1997 as shipments reached 5.636 million units,
a 283 percent increase over 1996 shipments of 1.473 million units, according to
Dataquest, a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: GART). Ericsson continued
to lead the market with 41 percent market share, but it suffered from not having
a presence in the IS-95 CDMA market. For vendors to achieve long term
success in the U.S. digital handset market, they will need products in all
segments.

"While IS-136 TDMA and GSM still represent significant market
opportunities for vendors, looking forward, IS-95 CDMA is expected
to be the largest segment comprising 52 percent of the U.S. digital
market by 2002," said Mr. Hoffman.

Have you seen anything on the net about Dataquest's listing of
semiconductor companies' marketshare in the consumer electronics
sector? I believe it should have been out by now.

Shane,

Interesting, I just noticed in today's IBD, semis have started moving up in rank. Elec-Semiconductor Mfg group showing 81/87/117, and was also included in yesterday's top ten groups for performance which is really positive on a 380+point Dow/ 90+point Naz day, right?

.......and then we've got the Elec-Semiconductor Equips far behind (where they belong) showing 185/191/194.

Perhaps we've seen the lows for this cycle.......who knows?!?

**Sorry, all the reports I've seen cost big bucks and are outdated anyway.......will look some more later.
