<<Other movement away from free markets by different countries will reflect different agendas as well>>

True, but I think all of those agendas will reflect a common perception that the rules of the game are badly stacked against smaller, less prosperous countries in vulnerable stages of development. Very few are able to take the HK route, which was possible only because of the large dollar reserves HK has accumulated. While Malaysia's moves may be tainted with a large degree of demagoguery, it would be unfortunate to assume that all such moves are similarly tainted, or that there are no systemic problems that need to be addressed. I speak frequently with Japanese, Taiwanese, and Korean investors here, and I've heard several mention recently that when the US economy was in the vulnerable stages of its growth the sort of speculative attacks that are common now would have been much more difficult. They do have a point, I would say, and their concerns do need to be addressed.

Stitch,

I thought the actions of Mahatir outrageous, but possibly necessary considering the things that were happening in Malaysia.

Then came the Anwar firing and discrediting and the reported arrests of some opponents. Now I have the impression that there's a dictatorship in the making.

Stitch,

trying to make heads or tails out of Malaysia...

Is Anwar starting a revolution? Is Malaysia in danger of a Indonesia style collapse?
