Matt:

Maybe Steve can rant on this for us, I am far from a networking gearhead,
just follow stock and industry.

Okay on cue I will go over this one more time ;-)

End to end solutions are what everyone wants these days. The reasons are numerous.. among them:

One Supply Contact
One Service Contact
One Waranty Contact (no this and the one above aren't the same usually)
No Incompatibilities.
Bulk discounts
Color co-ordinated equipment (okay so that's a stretch)
One source of training for IT staff (this can save many days of an IT tech's time and considering these guys get $55K+ a year, that's a lot of dollars).

By comparison, if I want to build a bits and pieces network I can count on at least twice as long to set it up (incompatibilities abound in this field), twice as long to order it, probably twice as long for it to get shipped, no (or less) volume discount, more manuals and training for the staff (more $$ again), multiple waranty and service contracts to maintain..

All in all the cost to go piece meal is about twice that of end to end. Plus, end to end is easier to upgrade than piece meal. Usually a company will bring out products all at the same time that support each other. With different vendors I can't be guaranteed that they will have compatible solutions within a year of each other. That's a big gamble when your business depends on it's network.

Steve

PS I wouldn't touch CS crap with a 20 foot pole. It's all garbage with a fairly high DOA rate.. (I swear those guys don't do any quality assurance).
