Protest slashes gasoline prices

SAN FRANCISCO
(AP)--Motorists are lining up for
blocks in the San Francisco Bay
area this week to take advantage
of a popular protest--99-cent
gallon gas.

Gasoline dealers are fighting
alleged unfair pricing strategies
by their distributor, Tosco Oil
Co. The Bay area pays about 35
cents more per gallon than in
Southern California.

Some customers are waiting in line so
long they're running out of
gas. Sergio Reyes waited 35 minutes Tuesday to fill his tank at
one of two British Petroleum stations offering the sale in San
Francisco. Was it worth it?

"Absolutely," he said. "I purposely drove on fumes to take
advantage of this situation. It's unfair that L.A. has cheaper
prices, but I don't want to live there either."

On Monday, the United Dealer Group, an organization of 500
California franchise gasoline dealers, kicked off the protest at
Owner Rod Akky's BP station in San Ramon. Akky estimated he
lost $2,200.

"I'm losing money but I'm making a statement," he said. "It's a
matter of greed and consumer gouging for the oil companies."

But Paul Oves, vice president of public affairs for Tosco, denied
the allegations. He said larger competitors such as Chevron,
Texaco and Shell determine the prices at Bay area pumps.

"Supply and demand is a factor, but you can't compare prices in
Los Angeles to San Francisco because they are two different
markets with different dynamics," Oves said.

The five-hour sale rotates to different stations each day this week.
The 99-cent sale moves to a Hayward BP station on
Wednesday. Unocal stations join in Thursday in South San
Francisco and Friday in Santa Clara.

Hi Dell Bear Thread, well Oracle numbers are out tonight and once again they are horrible - well the people on the Oracle thread dont think so, they think they are great, but they have the brains of a clam. Oracle posted only 16% rise in license revenue, the rest was services (which dont matter). To me it seems like Msft sql server 7 is an Oracle killer in the Novell tradition, meaning all the dbms server revenue will move from the unix-based vendors to NT-based Dell or Cpq. Any thoughts on this? Sorry if off topic just send me a pm.
