See this news: Headline: Glenayre's Accesslink II Interactive Two-Way Pager Now Available Through SkyTel ====================================================================== Partners Program Also Announced to Expand the Development of Third Party Applications SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Wireless Access Group of Glenayre Technologies Inc. announced today that its next-generation, two-way advanced messaging device, the AccessLink(TM) II, is now available through SkyTel's SkyWriter service. The AccessLink II is the smallest, fully interactive advanced messaging device on the market, the same size as a standard alphanumeric pager. The AccessLink II offers complete two-way features including message origination and custom reply, sending and receiving e-mail messages and an easy-to-use, folder-based user interface. With the ability to send and receive custom e-mail messages and a battery life of over 30 days, the AccessLink II provides users with a "no compromises" solution for size, battery life and functionality. The AccessLink II operates on a single, AA alkaline battery. "Glenayre's second-generation device is a quantum leap in both form factor and performance," said John T. Stupka, president and CEO of SkyTel Communications Inc. "When you take a device that's better, smaller and easier to use and couple that with SkyTel's expanded coverage and network services, you have a high probability of a very satisfied customer. We believe the market will respond strongly to the AccessLink II." SkyTel is pricing the device at $195 with leasing options available; SkyTel's service plans start at $24.95/month. IrDA Connectivity One of the AccessLink II's newest features is a built-in, IrDA-compatible infrared communications port that allows users to exchange data wirelessly with laptops, handheld devices and palmtops to the pager, and vice-versa. This functionality offers users an easy and universal way of "connecting" the pager to today's portable devices. With the IrDA port, the AccessLink II can act as a wireless modem to send standard paging and e-mail messages from a handheld computer or laptop. This gives users the option of creating messages on either their two-way pager or handheld device. The industry-standard IrDA port also allows the user to easily exchange address information between the pager and other IrDA devices. "The advanced messaging industry will be a source of explosive growth over the next few years," said Gary Hermansen, president and general manager of Glenayre's Wireless Access Group. "Together with SkyTel's service, the AccessLink II brings users to the highest level of paging by serving as an excellent stand-alone, two-way messaging device or a complementary device to handheld and laptop computers. The flexibility and convenience of the AccessLink II will lead to new and exciting application areas." Partners Program Wireless Access is also announcing today the creation of its Partners Program. Through this program, Wireless Access will provide direct support to software developers and hardware manufacturers who wish to develop applications utilizing the advanced features of the AccessLink II. The new IrDA port, for instance, could provide new wireless data exchange applications for the Windows CE and Palm Computing platforms. Partners Program member and software developer, JP Systems, is currently working with Wireless Access to provide future messaging applications for the AccessLink II. Some examples of third party applications include information queries such as stock quotes, package tracking, flight reservations and sales force automation. "We are looking for third parties to develop the next great must-have application that utilizes advanced wireless messaging. Our Partners Program will enable developers to leverage the strengths of the AccessLink II into their specific applications," said Greg Pinter, senior director of strategic programs for Glenayre's Wireless Access Group. The benefits to partners in the program include discounted product pricing, access to detailed technical information and direct support for qualified developers.
