LSI Logic Delivers System-on-a-Chip Excellence for Cabletron's SMARTSWITCH 6000

September 9, 1998 08:01 AM

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic LSI and Cabletron Systems, Inc. CS today announced that LSI Logic's system-on-a-chip expertise played a key role in the development of Cabletron's next generation SMARTSWITCH 6000 data networking product. From contract to product completion, LSI Logic delivered a critical ASIC in less than five weeks.

"LSI Logic's design methodology and expertise were responsible for solving a last minute component problem which delayed the introduction of the new second SMARTWITCH 6000 product," said Ken Latimer, vice president of Cabletron engineering. "LSI successfully completed many other ASIC designs for us in the past and we knew they were the only choice to meet our aggressive schedule demands. Our development group received world-class support from LSI Logic's engineering team. The company was able to deliver working ASIC silicon in record time after another supplier failed to do so. LSI Logic is a true system-on-a-chip company that delivers results."

The Cabletron and LSI Logic collaboration is the latest in a series of successful joint efforts in which LSI Logic has proven the value of system-level integration for advanced networking products. By providing high-performance, system-level building blocks supporting the networking market, LSI Logic is enabling industry leaders like Cabletron to extend their leadership in high-growth markets. The design work on the critical ASIC was fully sustained by engineering support from LSI Logic's design center as well as MINT Technology(TM), a wholly owned subsidiary of LSI Logic. MINT Technology specializes in ASIC design services including design, verification, and test.

Cabletron and LSI Logic have been working closely together for the past 8 years. Together, the two companies have collaborated on the development of multiple ASICs for Cabletron's SMARTSWITCH 2000, 6000 and 9000 product families.
