Monaco - Re: " Bottom line Paul, would you say this PCI thing is good, bad, or not important to Intel's future bottom line??"

First, it is not "this PCI thing".

The PCI bus, developed originally by Intel, is the universal parallel I/O bus for Intel architecture systems.

Apple Computer now uses the PCI bus in its internal desktop machines as does Sun Microsystems in many of its workstations.

The ENHANCEMENT of the I/O bus - for future servers - is the issue. How should I/O be improved, advanced, etc and who should do it.

Ultimately, this is extremely important to Intel as Intel-based servers forge their way into higher performance, mission critical applications.

Whether it is Intel or a consortium of industry OEMs that "develop" the I/O structure is not necessarily an issue. However, from Intel's standpoint, the BUS should be an OPEN standard so that Intel can design peripheral support chips and sell them - royalty free - TO ALL CUSTOMERS.

That generates high volume and ultimately high profits.
