This crash is a blessing - Nokia is notoriously tight-fisted and has been reluctant to make acquisitions at high prices. Now that the internet company prices are starting to look tolerable, perhaps they'll splurge.

Great news from Singapore: a company there is investing over 1 billion US$ in a brand new GSM network. Only two companies are left in the competition: Nokia and Ericsson. The two existing Singapore GSM networks were provided by Nokia and Ericsson. This is a biggie, perhaps the biggest new GSM deal in 1998. According to a recent article Nokia has landed 7 new GSM customers this year, leaving Ericsson far behind. This new network will be the most advanced in the world: the company is asking for cutting-edge novel GSM features that aren't yet implemented anywhere else. If Nokia can land this, they'll cement their rep as the most advanced GSM network company. There could be a psycholocigal boost from this: a major new Asian contract announced within a couple of weeks could calm down investors a bit about Asian infrastructure worries.
