Re: Hungry digicams

I've noticed that too. I've owned, um, at least six different models of digicams, and they've all been battery mow hounds. Well, actually I didn't keep the Casio long enough to burn even one set (it was THAT bad) and the Sony FD7 had a built in rechargeable (which was REALLY nice) but the others were definitely candidates for reallllly long extension cords. <gg>

If you asked me what it is about digicams that chews up so many mA though, I couldn't tell ya. The LCD display? The CCDs? The flashing process? The focus motors? The brains? Obviously not the focus motors since a set of triple-A's runs my 35mm Nikons forever...

P.S. On the subject of digicams, I've seen both quant-shop data and personal observation that digital cameras are getting really popular. Although there have been analysts, articles, and posters here that have prayed for digicams to become the salvation of the HDD sector, I can tell ya it ain't gonna happen.

UNTIL.

TWO THINGS HAPPEN.

1. Flash rams get really big and really cheap. I wanna see 20 meg flash for 20 bucks.

2. Digicams figure out how to get that 20 megs into the camera faster than BLOODY GODDAMN 112kbps serial ports. 10Mb USB would be nice. I'd even settle for 1.5Mb IrDA ... you gotta have BIGGER FREAKIN PIPES to get those 20 megs to your computer or photoprinter or whatever. Maybe Bluetooth will deal with this.

Once we have that, people will be shooting 20-100 megs per outing, and need someplace to sock all that awful digital photography away to torment their friends and relatives. <g> Doesn't take long to fill up gigs at that rate.

P.P.S. As a thread FYI, 8 meg flash goes for 80 bucks right now. Puke Hurl Vomit.

ALL:

Guys the mini harddrive will consume much less power than the flash. Don't think that just because it has moving parts it is more power hungry. Do you know what consumes the MOST power in your machine over the time it is on.. the RAM.. Yes harddrives draw big AMPs at start up but once the momentum is working it's real easy to keep the disks spinning.
