CD Warehouse Commits to Pre-Owned Music Commerce Site; IBM Selected to Build and Deploy e-business Solution for CD Warehouse
PR Newswire - September 09, 1998 07:25

OKLAHOMA CITY, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- CD Warehouse, Inc. (Nasdaq: CDWI) today announced its plans to develop and launch an on-line community and electronic commerce site to sell pre-owned and new music compact discs (CDs) on the Internet. By implementing an IBM** e-business solution, CD Warehouse will launch the largest, pre-owned music CD commerce site on the Internet, just prior to the holiday shopping season.

CD Warehouse plans to invest more than one million dollars to establish its on-line community and commerce site, which will be rolled-out in two phases. Consumers will find music selections easily with advanced search functions and enjoy the on-line community created by the chat rooms and bulletin boards. Behind the scenes, the solution will eventually combine the pre-owned inventory from more than 300 retail stores into a master database and route CD orders to the closest store with in stock inventory.

"By extending our enterprise to the Internet, CD Warehouse will provide better customer service by offering consumers music selections from our entire inventory and will create synergy among our franchise stores," said James Lee, vice president, Interactive Marketing, CD Warehouse. "IBM is empowering CD Warehouse to be the dominant music retailer on the Internet."

About IBM e-business solution

IBM is the solution provider responsible for the development and implementation of the CD Warehouse on-line community and electronic commerce site. The IBM e-business solution for CD Warehouse will incorporate IBM Net. Commerce Start** merchant server, DB2 Universal Database** and MQSeries** messaging software. IBM Net. Commerce will enable consumers to conduct searches and secure credit card transactions. IBM DB2 Universal Database will manage business and inventory data and multimedia content. MQSeries messaging software will manage the movement of order and inventory data between the 300 stores.

IBM Global Services will build and deploy this new e-business solution and integrate it with CD Warehouse's existing business applications. IBM Global Web Solutions will provide content hosting at IBM server farm facilities on its RS/6000 family of servers.

"By becoming an e-business, CD Warehouse will reap the rewards from new market opportunities created by electronic commerce," said Karl Salnoske, general manager, electronic commerce, IBM Software Solutions Division. "CD Warehouse will serve as an example in the music industry due to its unique niche in conducting electronic commerce."
