Any good shorts today or wait for another sucker rally?

Any thoughts on SUNW (Sun Microsystems)? I've got to believe that their biggest customers are high-tech engineering firms exactly of the type who are now battling a global semiconductor recession. Might we see a trickle-down effect?

Looking longer term, Intel's entry into the workstation market could seal SUNW's coffin. SUNW is actually participating in their own demise by porting Solaris over to Merced. Who would buy an overpriced, proprietary machine when you can buy an Intel-based workstation that will run Windows NT and Solaris, and probably for half the price?

In that light, how about some 2001 PUTS?

Today I am short ZITL and ATLIF.
Much better to short companies that are scams.
Just a matter of time before they are under $1.00.
ALTIF today supports a market cap of $144 mil.
ALTIF has no revenues at all.
It is a development stage company, that claims to have a rock jig.
This rock jig is no ordinary rock jig. It is a very special rock jig.
So special, that ALTIF contracts out the manufacturing of the
few samples working models, to a machine shop in Marysville,CA.
Rumor is that the molds used to build the models were secretly
destroyed and then taken overnight to Area 51 , in nearby NV.

sure is a nice day,michael

Re : ALTIF

The CJ technology has existed for several years. Altair bought the technology for around 4 million in 1996. Altair management has claimed that they have made significant improvements to the technology. I consider this claim to be false - the amount spent on Testing, research and development during fiscal 1997 was only $ 78,034.

Over the last 3 years, the management has claimed that the CJ was very successful (some of the claims go back to 1994) in the following areas

- Recovery of ultra fine gold from waste streams or former tailings;
- heavy minerals recovery (zircon,titanium,etc.)
- Coal Washing
- Environmental remediation.

In the future, the management will probably make claims about being successful in improving yields for tin.

Till date, Altair has not been successful in generating a single dollar in revenues. The management claims that they "lease" their CJs while in fact, they "give" them for free.

Altair has a lease on some property in Camden, TN. This property was previously leased by several firms who found the titanium deposits to be unprofitable. Altair management claims that with the help of their CJ, they can unlock a potential 2 billion worth of titanium
from this property.

Among the red flags ...

- very few employees (I think the number is 7).
- very low research & development expenses.
- half-hearted attempts at exploiting the "2 billion property". Altair has spent less than a million on this property.

I believe that Altair will never generate any significant revenues from leasing out the CJs. The TN property will also not generate anything.

The drawbacks for initiating a short position are
- Altair burns very little cash. They can survive for a long time with their current cash.
- ALTIF stock is touted by several newsletters. In their defense, I might add that they initiated coverage when Altif was a penny stock trading on the Alberta Stock Exchange
- Plenty of hype

Disclaimer : I am currently short Altif - my opinion might be biased.

Regards.
