You're forgetting the emotional impact. Usually it's not as simple as two people waking up one day saying "gosh honey, I don't like you any more". The anger, the resentment, all build up over time. One or both people feel seriously wronged, and their egos are brutalized. Vengeance is not uncommon. You're talking about two people that once felt they could spend the rest of their lives together, and one of them (or both) has done something to destroy that dream. Now you're talking about fear, revenge, and other unhealthy emotions.

If you expect rationality at a time like that, you will be very disappointed.
